Bollywood has produced some of the most iconic and influential films in cinematic history. "Sholay" set the standard for action and drama, becoming a cultural phenomenon. 1. Sholay (1975)

In the village of Ramgarh, retired police chief Thakur Baldev Singh plots to bring down the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh and enlists the help of two lesser criminals, Jai and Veeru . They soon learn that he has no arms, and that Gabbar was the one who cut them off. Enraged by this, they redouble their efforts to help.

2. Guide (1965)

A tour guide, Raju takes a serious minded archaeologist Marco and his beautiful but troubled wife, Rosie on an excursion to look at ancient caves. Despite reservations, Raju is attracted to Rosie, even when he learns of her past. Rosie leaves Marco for Raju, but only tragedy awaits the new lovers.

3. Pyaasa (1957)

Vijay writes unpopular poems about the destitute and poor. Ridiculed by his brothers and scorned by publishers, Vijay finds encouragement in Gulabo. Gulabo convinces a publisher to print his poems, believing Vijay to be dead. The poems are wildly popular, thanks to the myth conjured around Vijay's supposed death.

Two photographers tries very hard to establish their new business in town. While they realize that it's pretty hard to keep competing with the other businesses in the area, they sumble upon a murer. They experience the shady side of real estate after that.

In college, Farhan and Raju form a great bond with Rancho due to his positive and refreshing outlook to life. Years later, a bet gives them a chance to look for their long-lost friend whose existence seems rather elusive.

6. Mughal-e-Azam (1960)

Set in the 16th century Mughal court of Emperor Akbar, heir to the throne, Prince Saleem falls in love with the beautiful commoner Anaarkali. Saleem's father, refuses to let his son marry below his status and a mighty battle of wills ensues. Underpinning this doomed story of love is the troubled relationship between father and son.

7. Gol Maal (1979)

Ramprasad Dashrathprasad Sharma is told that if he changes his appearance, he might get a job. Following this advice he creates a new persona for himself, which soon intervenes with his boss' personal life who mainly judges people by their mustache during the interviews.

8. Do Bigha Zamin (1953)

Poor farmer Shambhu Mitro is forced to migrate to Calcutta to become a rickshaw puller in a bid to make enough money to save his land from the clutches of a rich landlord. However, like the many thousands of poor people sleeping on the streets, Shambhu's future turns and there is little hope of him saving his land.

9. Lagaan (2001)

In 1893 in a small village, the tyrannical Captain Russell has imposed an unprecedented land tax on its citizens. Outraged Bhuvan, a rebellious farmer, rallies the villagers to publicly oppose the tax. Russell challenges Bhuvan and his men to a game of cricket, if they can defeat Russell's team, the tax will be repealed.

10. Mother India (1957)

The wedding of Radha and Shamu is at hand, but the loan they take out to pay for the ceremony ends up leading to their ruin. Unable to pay the mounting interest rates, the couple is forced to give up three quarters of their crop. Shamu works the fields in an attempt to alleviate their poverty but a loose boulder crushes his arm, rendering him incapable of work.

11. Anand (1971)

Dr. Bhaskar Bannerjee treats a cancer patient, Anand Saigal, who upon learning of his impending death determines to use the time he has left to the absolute fullest. Bannarjee's experience with the patient leaves a profound impression on him and so he writes a heartrending bestseller based on recorded interviews with Anand.

12. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

Raised in entirely opposite beliefs of households Raj and Simran meet on a trip to Europe. After some initial misadventures, they fall in love. The battle begins to win over Simran's family trust and take her away from her soon to be marriage.

13. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)

Bhootnath gets a job as a servant in the mansion of a large family living in Calcutta. The youngest son is a wastrel who spends all his time drinking and sleeping around, which breaks the heart of his faithful wife, Chhoti Bahu. Bhootnath becomes infatuated with her and befriends her but is saddened when he witnesses the desperate measures she takes to woo back her husband.

14. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Three friends Akash, Sameer and Siddharth discover that post-collegiate life will test their tight-knit bond. As Sameer falls for Pooja, an unavailable beauty; Siddharth pursue an older divorcée named Tara. Meanwhile, brash Akash travels to Australia, where he reconnects with Shalini, a girl he'd previously wronged.

15. Satya (1998)

Satya comes to Mumbai in search of work but is thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit. He must delve into the depths of Mumbai's criminal underworld to survive. Fresh out of prison, he meets a beautiful singer named Vidya. To win her heart, Satya decides to conceal his criminal dealings from her, which grows more difficult as a brutal gang war heats up.

Amar and Prem belong to middle-class families but dream big. Both of them vie to win over Raveena, a multimillionaire's daughter and along the way, they run into a local gangster, Teja.

Two lifelong friends take a third friend on a road trip through Spain instead of throwing a traditional bachelor party. Going through various daring activities they learn more about themselves.

After his failure at winning a gold medal for the country, Mahavir Singh Phogat vows to realize his dreams by training his daughters despite societal pressures for the sport which was mainly competed by men during that time.

20. Deewaar (1975)

Two brothers raised in the same family grew up differently. One rises to the top of the Mumbai crime syndicate and another one becomes a police officer. They head for an epic showdown when their paths cross doing their jobs.

Rani, a 24 a year old homely girl decides to go on her honeymoon alone when her fiancé calls off the wedding. Traveling around Europe, she finds joy, makes friends and gains new-found independence.

22. Swades (2004)

Mohan Bhargava is a successful NRI working at NASA in USA. Driven by nostalgia, he returns to his roots to find the nanny who raised him in his homeland, intending to bring her back to America. His journey leads him into the rural heart of India, to the village of Charanpur.

The police choose not to believe him however the bombs tear through the city that Friday. Through a series of interviews, DCP Rakesh Maria comes closer to discovering who the leader of the conspiracy is.
